「Rikkyo Rugby, the best part of being in Japan」
When did you start playing rugby and why?
ラグビーを始めたきっかけを教えてください。
I started playing rugby back in 2017. At that time, I was feeling quite lonely, and I thought joining a sports club would be a good way to meet people and make friends. I chose to play rugby because my grandfather played rugby when he was young, and we all watched the Six Nations together every year. I ended up playing for the same team that my grandfather played for many years ago, Chipping Sodbury Rugby Football Club.
ラグビーを始めたのは2017年です。当時、私は少し自分が孤独であるように感じていました。そこで、スポーツクラブに入れば人と出会うことや友人を作ることができると思いました。ラグビーという競技を選んだのは、祖父が若い頃にラグビーをやっていたこと、そして毎年家族でSix Nationsを観ていたことがきっかけです。そして私は祖父が以前所属していたチームである、Chipping Sodbury Rugby Football Clubでプレーすることになりました。
What made you think of joining the Rikkyo Rugby Football Club?
立教大学体育会ラグビー部に入部しようと思った経緯を教えてください。
Ever since I started playing rugby, I’ve never once wanted to quit. That meant that when I was looking at what university to go to, I chose Rikkyo University as the website said that English support was available, and that I’d be able to join the club. I messaged Rikkyo Rugby on Instagram a few months before arriving in Japan, and my first training session with the club was only my second day in the country.
ラグビーを始めてから、辞めたいと思ったことは一度もありません。そのため日本の大学に通うと決め通学先を選ぶ際に、英語のサポートがあり、さらに部活に入ることができるという部分に魅力を感じ、立教大学を選びました。来日する数か月前にInstagramを経由し、立教大学体育会ラグビー部宛に、在学中に部活動に参加したい旨のメッセージを送りました。そして来日2日目に、初めての練習に参加しました。
Are there any barriers that you have faced during your time at Rikkyo Rugby Football Club?
立教大学体育会ラグビー部で過ごす間に直面した壁はありますか。
Initially upon my arrival, I couldn’t communicate at all in Japanese, and my fitness level was awful. When I first joined, I had no idea of what was going on or where I should be. I relied heavily on Daito to help explain things – still at this point he helps massively in places I can’t understand. It’s taken many months, and I still can’t speak Japanese very well, but I can now usually understand most of what coaches and players are saying. The first few weeks were also very hard on my fitness level; I had a lot of catching up to do!
来日当初は、日本語では全くコミュニケーションが取れなかったですし、体力レベルも非常に低かったです。練習に参加し始めた頃は、今何が起こっているのか、今自分がどこにいるべきなのか、全く分かりませんでした。そのため私に英語で状況説明をしてくれる大斗（渡辺大斗・4年）に頼ってばかりでした。（初の練習参加から数か月経った今でも、私が上手く理解できない部分については大斗が助けてくれています。）こうした状況把握ができるようになるには何か月もかかりましたし、未だに日本語は上手く話せませんが、コーチや選手の言っていることは大体理解できるようになりました。練習に参加し始めた最初の数週間は、体力面でも練習内容の把握やコミュニケーションなどの面でも非常に苦労しました。
What was one of the most memorable moments of your time at Rikkyo Rugby Football Club?
立教大学体育会ラグビー部で過ごした期間で印象的だったことはありますか。
A few moments stand out. The first few days of training, when everything was new, and I was starting to understand what I had signed up for. Or when I gave a speech, in Japanese, to present a gift jersey from my home club (Aberystwyth University Men’s Rugby). However, I think my favorite moment with the club was our recent match against Gakushuin University. I played the full 80 minutes as Vice-Captain, and it was the most fun I’ve ever had on the field. I think I played so much better than I would have done at the start of my exchange, and it was an honor to do so in the first team jersey.
いくつかの瞬間が際立って印象に残っています。まずは練習に参加し始めた最初の数日間です。特に最初の数日間の練習は全てが新鮮で、「自分が何に足を踏み入れたのか」が少しずつ分かり始めたときが印象に残っています。また、母国のクラブ（Aberystwyth University Men’s Rugby）から立教大学体育会ラグビー部へ贈られた記念ジャージを贈呈するために日本語でスピーチをしたときのことも鮮明に覚えています。しかし先に挙げたことよりも一番好きな瞬間だと感じたのは、先日の学習院大学との試合でした。バイスキャプテンとして80分間フルタイム出場したのですが、この時にフィールドでプレーしたのが今までで一番楽しかったです。最初の頃とは比べものにならないくらい良いプレーができたと思いますし、ファーストジャージを着てフィールドに立つことができたのは私にとって光栄な瞬間でした。
What is different about trainings and matches in England and in Japan?
練習中や試合中の雰囲気でイギリスと日本で異なると感じる点はありますか。
Matches in Japan feel a lot more respectful than back in the UK. For example, I enjoy bowing in front of the opposition team and crowd support at the end of matches. It is an experience you’d never have in the UK, and it reinforces the rugby values that make the sport so special. In terms of training, the sheer work rate of the team throughout the week is unique. There are very few university teams in the UK that train as much as Rikkyo do.
日本の試合は、イギリスの試合よりもリスペクトが感じられます。例えば、試合終了時に相手チームや観客の前でお辞儀をするという行為から相手への尊敬心を感じることができます。イギリスでは決してできない経験ですし、ラグビーというスポーツを特別なものと位置づける価値観を強化してくれているように思います。練習面では、1週間を通しての運動量の高さが特徴的です。立教ほど練習量の多い大学チームは、イギリスにはほとんどないと思います。
Do you have a person that you admire?
目標としている人はいますか。
Absolutely, I’m constantly impressed by the talent of the A team players. Playing in the highest league is a seriously impressive accomplishment and watching these members do it week after week is inspiring. I’m also impressed by the dedication of members who have been in long-term rehab. Turning up every day despite not being able to play for months on end is commendable determination.
Aチームの選手たちの才能にはいつも感心させられます。関東大学対抗戦Aグループでプレーをするというのは本当に素晴らしいことで、毎週のようにチームの目標達成に向け日々練習に励んでいるメンバーを見ていると、感動を覚えます。また、長期リハビリを経ているメンバーの献身ぶりにも感銘を受けています。何か月もプレーできないにも関わらず、毎日欠かさず練習に参加しリハビリメニューをこなしている姿は称賛に値すると感じます。
What is your motto?
座右の銘を教えてください。
There are two main pieces of wisdom that I live by; to “Trust in the process”, and to “Create your own luck”. Trusting in the process means doing the right thing even when you don’t want to, or when you don’t know what you should be doing. So long as you do the right thing in that situation, everything else will eventually work itself out. Creating your own luck means always working hard enough so that you can capitalize on opportunities when they arise. For example, I wanted to play rugby in Japan, so I joined Rikkyo and made sure to come to training. Playing rugby in Japan was never promised to me, so I had to train hard and put myself in the right places so that I could be picked when coaches decide team sheets. It sounds obvious, but I would have never accomplished my goal of playing rugby in Japan if I didn’t put the effort in to become a member of the club.
「プロセスを信頼すること」と「自分の運は自ら切り開くこと」です。プロセスを信頼するというのは、やりたくないときでも、何をすべきかわからないときでも、正しいと思うことをするということです。その状況において正しいと感じることをしてさえすれば、他のことはいずれうまくいくと信じています。自分で運を切り開くことは、チャンスが訪れたときにそれを生かせるように、常に一生懸命努力するということです。例えば、私は日本でラグビーをしたかったので、立教に入り練習には必ず参加しました。私は日本で試合に出場することが確約されているわけではなかったので、コーチが試合メンバーを決める際にメンバーに選出してもらえるように、一生懸命練習し自分にとって納得がいく状態にコンディションを整えるよう心掛けています。当たり前のことですが、立教に入ってラグビー部に身を置くことをしなければ、日本でラグビーをするという目標は達成できなかったと思います。
What do you value when playing rugby?
ラグビーをプレーする中で大切にしていることを教えてください。
For me, the most valuable part of playing rugby is the camaraderie you have between your teammates. Even though I may not be able to have conversations with everyone, it doesn’t matter when you’re on the pitch. We’re all there for one reason, and we’re all working towards the same goal. I think there’s an unspoken bond in working together like that.
私にとってラグビーをプレーする上で最も大切にしたいことは、チームメイトとの仲間意識です。例え皆と会話ができなくても、グラウンドに立てばそんなことは関係ありません。皆がそこにいる理由は1つで、同じ目標に向かっています。そして、そのように目標を互いに共有し達成に向け共に努力をすることで、暗黙の絆が生まれるのだと考えます。

Being a member of Rikkyo Rugby has easily been the best part about living in Japan this last year. Thank you very much for all your support. I’m excited to watch Rikkyo play in the autumn league when I’m back in the UK.
立教大学体育会ラグビー部の一員になれたことは、この1年間日本で生活してきた中で最も素晴らしいことでした。本当にありがとうございました。イギリスに帰国してから、秋の関東大学対抗戦で立教大学のプレーを見るのが今から楽しみです。
